Dxtre3d (DirectX Tomb Raider Editor 3D) is an alternative (commonly called unofficial) level editor for TR1—TR5 game engines. It is written in Delphi independently from Core Design by a programmer named TPascal. Unlike TRLE, there is no need in inbetween WAD object files, at it is able to recognize compiled level files as base files.

[edit] History

Dxtre3d is an evolution of old OpenGL-based level editor called TRED. Interface was redesigned and API was changed to DirectX 8.1, resulting in a completely new editor. First Dxtre3d version appeared in 2003.

[edit] Status

Despite intensive development and user-friendly interface, Dxtre3d mostly remains abandoned by TR level editing community, and majority of custom levels are built with TRLE (and its derivative, NGLE). Latest Dxtre3d 2.0 revision is dated July 2007, however, there is a new version 3.0 in development, which won't be compatible with old TR engines and will be used to create levels for new clone TR engine called FexEngine.

[edit] Features

  • Different controls: mouse-controlled room rotation and zooming
  • Multilanguage interface
  • Diagonal walls
  • Large textures (up to 256x256, was implemented before NGLE)
  • Ability to load any common image file as texture file
  • Powerful animated textures module (allows to create AnimRanges frame by frame)
